Engine hours are read-only data from a marine diagnostics perspective. Modifying engine hours would be a serious breach of integrity and resale value, and manufacturers have deliberately locked this function against external tools for very good reasons.
A boat that looks pristine can have failing sensors. An engine that runs smooth can have codes stored in its computer that nobody bothered to clear. A marine diagnostic tool takes the guesswork out of pre-purchase inspection. You're buying data, not hope.
Your throttle lever is not directly connected to fuel injectors or engine timing. Instead, a position sensor reports throttle position to the engine control module, which then commands fuel delivery, ignition timing, and pressure accordingly. Over time, if the throttle cable stretches, the sensor drifts, or the lever mechanism wears, the engine control module might misread the throttle position. This leads to hesitation, inconsistent power delivery, or difficulty reaching full RPM.
A standalone scanner running excellent marine diagnostic software beats a laptop running poor software. So choose your device type based on your working environment, then ensure the diagnostic software running on that device is comprehensive, well-supported, and appropriate for your needs.
With a diagnostic tool, you run a scan and the engine tells you what's wrong. A weak battery shows up in seconds. A fuel pump relay fault is identified immediately. Bad sensor data is flagged. You're not eliminating possibilities; you're seeing the actual fault.

Some modern engines use 'pending codes,' which are codes that have triggered once but aren't yet stored permanently. If the same condition doesn't recur within the next 10 to 20 engine starts, the pending code expires and clears automatically. Confirmed codes, by contrast, are stored codes that persist indefinitely until manually cleared.
